TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The California Senate passed Senate Resolution 63 on Friday, encouraging the state to deepen economic and cultural cooperation with Taiwan.
The measure, led by Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee Chair Jerry McNerney, commemorates the 41st anniversary of Taiwan and California becoming sister states, per CNA. It also highlights collaboration in semiconductors, AI, and tourism, sectors that support thousands of jobs in the state.
“Over the years, California’s partnership has grown into a strong bond of cooperation, cultural exchange, and community connection,” McNerney said. “Taiwanese Americans have made lasting contributions to California’s prosperity and diversity.”
According to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco, the resolution encourages California’s government to broaden exchanges with Taiwan while recognizing its capacity to participate meaningfully in global organizations. These include the UN, the World Health Organization, and Interpol.
This is the second straight year the California Senate has passed such a pro-Taiwan resolution. Last year, it passed a pro-Taiwan resolution for the first time in 10 years.
Taiwan is a key partner of the US in the Asia-Pacific region and California’s third-largest trading partner.
