TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Prosecutors charged Taipei City Council Deputy Speaker Yeh Lin-chuan (葉林傳) Friday with corruption and gambling in a case involving NT$3.14 million (US$102,880) in illegal profits.
The KMT politician allegedly influenced legislation to favor a gaming arcade he operated, the Liberty Times reported. Prosecutors are asking for a severe sentence for Yeh because he has shown no remorse, while they also indicted six others allegedly involved in the case.
Yeh’s involvement with the gaming arcade started in 2003, when he entrusted an associate to run the site for him. As the business failed to make profits, he turned to gambling in 2008 and applied for a license to operate adult content in 2011.
However, the city government rejected the application for several reasons, including the distance between the arcade and nearby schools and libraries. Yeh later used his role at the Taipei City Council to influence the drafting of new regulations for the sector in 2018, including a retroactive rule favoring his arcade.
