TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A poll of Trump voters released by a conservative organization tied to the president found that an overwhelming majority of respondents believe the US should prevent China from invading Taiwan.
In its July survey, the Vandenberg Coalition asked participants: Considering Taiwan's strategic and economic importance, particularly as the world’s top producer of semiconductors, “Do you believe it is in the vital national security interest of the United States to prevent China from controlling Taiwan?” The majority, 78%, selected “yes,” 9% chose “no,” and 13% did not know.
Respondents were then asked to choose from a list of actions the US should take to prepare for a potential defense of Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. At 54%, the most popular option was to urge allies and partners, including Taiwan, to boost defense spending and strengthen military readiness.
The second most popular option at 44% was to place more US military assets in the Indo-Pacific region. Tied for 39% was selling or loaning weapons to Taiwan and providing the country with non-defensive backing, such as economic, cyber, and energy support.
Only 25% opted for deploying US troops to Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. At 11%, the least popular option was the US not doing anything to aid in Taiwan's defense.
According to Influence Watch, the Vandenberg Coalition is headed by former officials in the Trump administration. Its board is headed by “longtime Republican-aligned foreign policy operative Elliott Abrams.”
The survey was carried out online from July 24–28 with a sample of 1,225 Trump voters. The margin of error for the total sample is ±2.8 percentage points.
