TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Cabinet on Friday released photos from past Taiwan–US trade negotiations to rebuke allegations that talks were held remotely.
Formosa Chair Wu Tzu-chia (吳子嘉) claimed Tuesday that Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君), the head of the negotiation team, had not met any high-ranking US officials in person and conducted most discussions via video conference, per CNA. Cabinet Spokesperson Li Hui-chih (李慧芝) swiftly dismissed that claim.
On Friday, the Taiwan-US commerce working group reiterated that team members had met in person with US officials on four occasions. During those meetings, Cheng met US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The working group also addressed calls for more transparency. It noted that it's standard practice to keep negotiation details under wraps until an agreement is finalized, following a confidentiality agreement signed by both parties. However, the team disclosed post-meeting information, including attendees, agendas, and durations.
On Aug. 6, KMT Chair Eric Chu (朱立倫) said the government should share portions of the negotiations to help affected industries prepare for future changes, per Liberty Times.
