TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Berlin Philharmonic will return to Taiwan in November for the first time in seven years, bringing three performances led by chief conductor Kirill Petrenko.
The orchestra will stage three concerts at the National Concert Hall from Nov. 11-13, per CNA. Opening night will feature Leos Janacek’s “Sinfonietta,” Bela Bartok’s “The Miraculous Mandarin” suite, and Igor Stravinsky’s “Petrushka.”
The following two nights will focus on a German-Austrian repertoire, with Robert Schumann’s “Manfred Overture,” Richard Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll,” and Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1 in C minor.”
Berlin Philharmonic General Manager Andrea Zietzschmann said at a press event that the orchestra had not performed in Taiwan for seven years. She praised Taiwanese audiences as “passionate and outstanding” and said the musicians were eager to come back.
Concert organizer The Management of New Art highlighted the orchestra’s ties with Taiwan, recalling that the Berlin Philharmonic’s debut in 2005 drew more than 30,000 fans to the National Theater and Concert Hall’s plaza.
Lutz Gullner, head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan, said the orchestra represents more than music, offering an emotional and aspirational experience. He said he hopes the tour will deepen ties between Taiwan and Europe.
