TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Chinese man who crossed the Taiwan Strait in an inflatable dinghy with his teenage son has been sentenced to eight months in prison.
The 41-year-old, Song Yuankun (宋元坤), was convicted Tuesday by the Taoyuan District Court of violating the Immigration Act, per UDN. His 17-year-old son remains at the Taipei Detention Center and will likely be deported.
The court said Song, a laborer from Yunnan Province, “severely undermined Taiwan’s national security and border integrity.” The sentence is subject to appeal.
According to the ruling, Song and his son believed Taiwan offered better opportunities, with the teen hoping to study hairdressing. They purchased an inflatable dinghy with an outboard motor online and departed Fujian Province at 6 a.m. on May 15.
The pair landed without incident on Taoyuan’s Kuan-yin Beach around 5:30 p.m. They initially accessed funds from an ATM but surrendered to police the next day after running out of money.
Investigators determined neither man was a spy, nor had they taken photos or sought information about Taiwan’s defenses.
