TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Wednesday announced a Cabinet reshuffle affecting 10 departments and 16 ministers and vice ministers.
Most of the appointments matched names reported by the media earlier in the day. Cho was scheduled to formally present the members of his “AI Action Cabinet 2.0” after Thursday’s weekly Cabinet meeting, per CNA.
The reshuffle followed the failure of recall votes against 24 Kuomintang legislators in July and August. Had they succeeded, the recalls would have eliminated the opposition majority in the Legislative Yuan and eased the passage of government policies.
Key changes focused on economic policy. Cabinet Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) will become minister of economic affairs, while former Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research President Yeh Chun-hsien (葉俊顯) takes over the National Development Council. Yeh has frequently advised governments on economic matters and is familiar with domestic business policies, the Cabinet said. Kung will be succeeded as secretary-general by Xavier Chang (張惇涵), outgoing presidential deputy secretary-general.
National Health Insurance Administration Director General Shih Chung-liang (石崇良) has been tapped as minister of health and welfare. The new minister of digital affairs is Deputy Minister Lin Yi-jing (林宜敬), a computer scientist with experience in business at Compeq Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and in publishing.
When the new Ministry of Sports launches on Sept. 9, its first minister will be Olympic badminton champion Lee Yang (李洋), who won men’s doubles gold with Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟) at both the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics.
