TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei’s Gongguan Roundabout, ranked the nation’s most dangerous intersection, will be demolished on Sept. 13 as part of a traffic safety improvement project.
The Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the redesign at Roosevelt Road and Keelung Road aims to eliminate overlapping traffic flows and reduce accidents, per CNA. Work will begin at midnight on Sept. 13.
A 2024 national assessment named the roundabout the most hazardous intersection in Taiwan. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said in March that because the site has logged the most accidents for seven consecutive years, it will be dismantled, the underpass filled in, and the junction converted into a standard intersection. Work was originally scheduled to start June 28.
The plan has faced opposition from residents who argue that removing the bus-only underpass will worsen traffic. At a July hearing, they called for alternatives such as adjusting lane markings and signals or holding a referendum before demolition, but the city rejected the proposal.
