TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Health Insurance Administration Director General Shih Chung-liang (石崇良) is expected to be named minister of health and welfare in a Cabinet reshuffle set to be announced Thursday.
After the failure of recall votes against 24 Kuomintang legislators in July and August, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said he would adjust his government team. Media reports Wednesday said 15 ministers and deputy ministers are likely to change posts, with the list to be finalized at Thursday’s weekly Cabinet meeting.
Health and Welfare Minister Chiu Tai-yuan (邱泰源) is among those leaving, with Shih reportedly moving up to replace him, per Liberty Times. The deputy minister’s role is expected to go to Centers for Disease Control Director General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥).
Key challenges awaiting the incoming minister include US tariffs on medicine, the sustainability of the health insurance system, and improving working conditions for medical staff. The ministry also plays a central role in Taiwan’s campaign to attend the annual World Health Assembly in Geneva.
