TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan does not take its freedom for granted, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) said at the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China gala in Taipei on Tuesday.
Taiwan’s democracy was hard-won, and Taiwanese know they must “safeguard and defend the achievements that earlier generations fought so hard to secure,” Hsiao said. As a key hub in the global supply chain, Taiwan will continue working with international partners to safeguard the values they all hold dear, she said.
Hsiao thanked IPAC members for standing with Taiwan to defend freedom and peace. She said their support reflects a commitment to justice and democratic values that promote global prosperity and stability.
IPAC’s opposition to authoritarian regimes has been an invaluable source of encouragement for Taiwan, helping the nation to progress amid geopolitical uncertainty and severe challenges, the vice president said.
With international support, Taiwan is stronger and more confident, she said.
Tuesday’s event invited Taiwanese and foreign lawmakers and Taiwanese celebrities to network and discuss how to preserve cross-strait stability. It was IPAC’s first gala held in Taipei.
