TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) on Tuesday unveiled a new municipal flag during a city council meeting.
The new flag features a white background and the city’s official seal, which depicts the Huxin Pavilion (湖心亭) in Taichung Park. Lu said that after discussions within city hall, officials decided to unify the seal and the flag, per CNA.
The previous design, in use since 1945, showed three red Chinese characters for Taichung City (臺中市) on a yellow background. Many residents considered it outdated and unattractive.

Taichung Civil Affairs Bureau Director Wu Shih-wei (吳世瑋) said all public agencies and private organizations in the city will adopt the new flag. It will also appear in competitions and external exchanges.
For example, the new flag will be displayed Tuesday evening when Taichung’s Xitun District Office signs a sister city agreement with Hoboken, New Jersey.
