TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Tuesday unveiled a NT$60 billion (US$1.96 billion) reconstruction budget for Typhoon Danas.
Cho outlined allocations by ministry: NT$20.3 billion for the Ministry of Agriculture, NT$18.7 billion for the Ministry of Economic Affairs, NT$6.9 billion for the Ministry of Transportation, NT$4.6 billion for the Council of Indigenous Peoples, and NT$3.8 billion for the Ministry of the Interior, per CNA.
Smaller amounts include NT$1.6 billion for the Ministry of Environment, NT$400 million for the Ministry of Education, NT$300 million each for the Ministry of Culture and the National Communications Commission, and NT$100 million for the Public Construction Commission. Another NT$3 billion is reserved for contingencies.
Cho said the NT$60 billion budget is supplemented by NT$6.1 billion redirected from existing budgets for urgent relief, plus NT$3.2 billion from special tax allocations for housing subsidies and work allowances. In total, the government is committing NT$69.3 billion.
The funding covers nine reconstruction categories, including NT$10.1 billion for agricultural facilities, NT$11 billion for power systems, NT$300 million for telecommunications, and NT$300 million for water and gas infrastructure. Another NT$4.8 billion is earmarked for housing, schools, and public facilities.
The premier emphasized the need for swift legislative approval to help disaster victims rebuild homes and revive economic activity. The goal is to return life to normal as quickly as possible, he added.
