TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Post suspended small package services to the US on Tuesday due to broad new tariffs to be imposed by the Trump administration.
Beginning on Friday, the US will end its de minimis tariff exemption for low-value items mailed from overseas, per CNA. All imports valued at or below US$800 (about NT$24,000) will be subject to customs duties.
Chunghwa Post said Monday it must halt US-bound shipments because the global postal system lacks a way to collect duties in advance, and partner carriers have suspended parcel transport. This affects international express mail service packages, parcels, ePackets, registered small packages, and ordinary small packages.
According to Chunghwa Post statistics, about 340,000 packages were sent to the US in 2024, most valued under US$800. This included e-commerce goods and parcels sent to friends and family.
The postal service said that document shipments will not be affected. Items such as EMS documents, letters, postcards, aerogrammes, printed materials, and newspapers can still be sent as usual.
Chunghwa Post added that customers wishing to send packages to the US may still use commercial express services such as DHL and FedEx, which can be arranged at post office counters.
