TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Seven KMT legislators declared victory after a second recall vote Saturday.
In a first round of recalls late last month, 24 other KMT lawmakers also defeated attempts to oust them. The legislators will not face new recalls before their terms end on Jan. 31, 2028.
The results also mean that the administration of President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will continue to face an opposition majority in the Legislative Yuan. The 52 KMT lawmakers and eight members of the TPP have often joined forces to pass legislation condemned by the government. Lai’s DPP holds 51 seats, with two KMT-leaning lawmakers making up the rest of the 113-seat legislature.
The lawmakers facing recall votes Saturday included Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), who has been tipped as a candidate for Taichung mayor in elections expected late next year. In his case, the recall campaign admitted defeat before he claimed victory, per CNA.
Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔) and Yen Kuan-heng (顏寬恒) survived recalls in Taichung, Ma Wen-chun (馬文君) and Yu Hao (游顥) in Nantou, Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才) in New Taipei, and Lin Szu-ming (林思銘) in Hsinchu County, according to figures from the Central Election Commission.
