TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan has welcomed new ambassadors from its allies Haiti, Belize, and Paraguay, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.
Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 12 countries, mostly small nations in the Pacific, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Three of them sent new ambassadors to Taipei to present their credentials to Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) Friday morning.
Roudy Stanley Penn had already represented Haiti in Taiwan from 2021 to 2024 before being appointed to a new term this year. He praised Taiwan’s vast experience in disaster prevention and agricultural transformation, the ministry said. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship.
Lin said he had previously met Paraguay’s new ambassador, Dario Filartiga Ruiz Diaz, during his July visit to Taiwan’s only ally in South America. The diplomat had impressed him with his knowledge of Taiwan-Paraguay relations, the minister said.
The third new ambassador to meet with Lin on Friday was Katherine Meighan of Belize. She had already visited Taiwan before as a beneficiary of an International Cooperation and Development Fund scholarship. Lin mentioned the opening up of Taiwan to white shrimp imports from Belize as giving relations a renewed impetus.
