TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung City Government has confirmed that a roast duck restaurant in Fengyuan District has been held legally responsible for a spate of food poisoning incidents.
Beijing Jinyinglou Roast Duck restaurant was shut down in late July after numerous reports of food poisoning from customers. After an investigation, Taichung Health Bureau found poor sanitation standards caused over 300 people to become ill, per UDN.
On Friday, the restaurant apologized for the incident at a press conference at the office of City Councilor Hsieh Chih-chung (謝志忠). The owner said that he will fully cooperate with city prosecutors and the business has hired a third-party firm to handle compensation.
The investigation reportedly discovered samples of salmonella in some of the food that was tested. An investigation by Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office is still ongoing to determine what criminal penalties may apply in the case.
When business operations were first suspended on July 24, authorities were aware of 47 cases of food poisoning traced to the restaurant. At the time, a new owner had just purchased the business and said he was unaware of health complaints from customers.
