TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The TPP urged voters to participate in the upcoming nuclear referendum on Saturday, with party chair Huang Kuo Chang (黃國昌) leading a vehicle parade in support.
Huang and party officials on Thursday drove through Taipei’s Wanhua, Shilin, Beitou, Daan, and other districts to boost voter turnout in the final stretch, per CNA. The party is planning a flash event on voting day, urging all citizens to participate.
On May 17, Taipower shut down Maanshan Nuclear Power’s Unit 2 in Pingtung County, marking Taiwan’s entry as a nuclear-free country. The TPP supports restarting the plant while the DPP does not.
Huang said in a press event that promotional events can happen on referendum days, unlike elections or recalls. He said the TPP’s youth and communication departments will coordinate online efforts to maximize awareness and turnout.
Huang criticized the DPP for failing to establish a legal framework for nuclear waste disposal during its nine years in power. He claimed that only NT$20 million (US$655,000) was spent this year to commission studies while the government’s non-nuclear task force has not met in four years.
He accused the DPP of using nuclear waste to scare the public while superficially promoting anti-nuclear ideology.
