TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail has unveiled images of its new N700ST trains, with an exterior design similar to the first-generation 700T.
Twelve trainsets were procured in May 2023 from the Hitachi Toshiba Supreme Consortium for about NT$28.5 billion (US$940 million). THSR said the new trains will meet holiday passenger demand and ease pressure on maintenance and scheduling, per UDN.
The first trainset is under construction and expected to arrive in Taiwan next August for testing, with service beginning in the second half of 2027. All N700ST trains are scheduled to be operational by 2028, increasing peak travel capacity by 25%.
The N700ST keeps the orange and black color scheme of the 700T while featuring subtle adjustments to the body. The train’s nose has been redesigned to optimize proportions and curvature for stability at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour.

The new generation is based on Japan’s N700S Shinkansen, with preparations underway for a second maintenance facility at Zuoying and new platform doors at Taipei Main Station. Additional hardware and software upgrades will also be introduced to accommodate the trains.
Each train will feature full-color LCD information displays, arrival light indicators, double-tier luggage racks, and wraparound seats with charging ports.
Noise and vibration reduction will enhance ride comfort, while new nursing rooms will include sinks, coat hooks, and infant seats. Wheelchair areas will increase from four to six, each equipped with securement devices.
