TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Morning joggers in the southeast Taiwan city of Taitung found their neighborhood near the ocean turned into a military camp, reports said Wednesday.
Missile launch trucks stood at the ready with other military equipment nearby still covered, per UDN. The vehicles began moving into the area near the city’s seaside park Tuesday evening.
Four missile installations believed to be for Sky Bow III missiles had their launch tubes pointed straight up toward the sky. Trucks for radar, communications, power generation, and command were also in place. A nearby swimming pool was closed to the public Wednesday morning as it was being used by the military, the report said.
Unconfirmed reports linked the deployment to China’s plans for a major military parade in Beijing on Sept 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with Japan. Military staff in Taitung declined to answer questions from media and kept both reporters and the public at a distance, per CNA.
