TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Democratic Progressive Party Legislative Caucus Secretary-General Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) on Monday rejected criticism of the party’s renewable energy policies, saying the Kuomintang is more closely linked to related scandals.
Wu’s remarks followed a public exchange between Pegatron Chair Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) and DPP Legislator Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) on Friday over the possible reopening of the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant, per Tai Sounds.
After the event, Tung criticized Chuang’s emphasis on localism, arguing that nuclear waste storage does not make nearby residents second-class citizens, per UDN. He instead blamed corruption, particularly local factions vying for renewable energy contracts, for undermining governance.
Taiwan People’s Party Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) later suggested Tung’s comments were aimed at local DPP factions allegedly involved in energy-related corruption, per Newtalk.
Wu disputed that interpretation, stressing that Tung’s remarks referred to factionalism in general, not the DPP. She cited the KMT’s ties to Wang We-tsung (王文宗), a defendant in a 2022 shootout case linked to renewable energy disputes.
Wu said Wang is deeply connected to KMT’s local network in Tainan and accused rivals of framing the scandals as DPP-linked for political purposes.
DPP Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) earlier revealed that Wang had worked as a local organizer for former KMT presidential candidates, per CNA. In response, KMT Legislator Hsieh Lung-chieh (謝龍介) said Wang had ties with both parties and noted that Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) visited Wang after taking office in 2022, per Storm Media.
