TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taoyuan Labor Department on Sunday hosted a celebration for the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, which falls on Aug. 17, drawing Indonesian migrant workers and new immigrants.
The event featured traditional Indonesian children’s games such as bottle ring toss, marble relay, and sack jumping. Deputy Mayor Su Jun-bin (蘇俊賓) joined participants in playing the games, per CNA.
Su said the city government organizes events during major Southeast Asian festivals to help foreign residents connect with one another and give their children a deeper understanding of their parents’ cultural traditions.
In July, the department held a Southeast Asian cultural and food fair near Taoyuan Train Station, with markets representing the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. Visitors enjoyed handmade crafts, traditional snacks, and live performances of folk music and dance.
In June, the city’s Sports Department hosted an Eid al-Adha celebration in Zhongli District, combining traditional Muslim festivities with a sports day for migrant workers that featured basketball, badminton, and table tennis.
As of last year, Taoyuan was home to 132,158 migrant workers, the highest number in Taiwan, accounting for 17.5% of the national total. Of these, 92.5% were employed in the manufacturing sector. Most come from Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, contributing to the local economy and enriching the city’s culture.
To help migrant workers adapt to life in Taiwan, the city government set up a foreign women and children service center offering assistance with pregnancy, employment, and short-term shelter. It also established a migrant worker service office to provide consultation, mediate labor disputes, assist with departure procedures, and help workers with daily challenges in Taiwan.
