TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 2025 Chengdu World Games ended with a closing ceremony on Sunday, with Taiwan finishing 15th in the medal count.
Taiwan won five gold, six silver, and one bronze medal. Cheng Shih-chung (鄭世忠), director-general of the Sports Administration, said the final tally shows Taiwan is making progress in international sports and the achievements are inspiring the public, per CNA.
Taiwan has participated in the World Games since 1981. Its best showing came at the Kaohsiung 2009 World Games, when it won a record nine gold, eight silver, and nine bronze medals.
In 2013 at the World Games in Cali, Colombia, Taiwan claimed five gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals.
Cheng credited Taiwan’s continued success to its coaches, athletes, and logistics team. He also thanked the organizers, saying the preparation ensured athletes were ready and the events ran smoothly.
Highlights for Taiwan this year included the women’s tug-of-war team winning its sixth consecutive World Games championship, Yang Sen (楊森) setting a world record with a 453.5 kg squat to win gold, and a decisive victory over the Netherlands in mixed beach korfball.
Cheng said the Sports Administration is now focused on preparing athletes for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Looking further ahead, he added the agency will support athletes and coaches in their preparations for the 2029 World Games.
