TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia awarded 37 students the Overseas Compatriot Scholarship at a ceremony last week.
Taiwan Representative to Malaysia Phoebe Yeh (葉非比) said the scholarship aims to encourage Malaysians to study in Taiwan, CNA reported. She expressed hope that they will experience Taiwan’s democracy, freedom, rule of law, and human rights during their stay.
Yeh also encouraged recipients to remain in Taiwan after graduation to pursue careers and achieve their goals.
Students with an average grade of 88/100 or above can receive NT$260,000 (US$8,661) per academic year, while those with an average of 85 or higher may apply for NT$100,000.
The Overseas Community Affairs Council launched the program in 2023. To date, 113 Malaysian students have received the scholarship, accounting for 19% of global recipients. This year’s awardees come from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Melaka, Perak, Sarawak, and Sabah.
