TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) visited Taitung County on Saturday to inspect agricultural damage from Typhoon Podul, calling for rapid disaster efforts for farmers.
Cho toured custard apple and banana farms alongside Agriculture Minister Chen Chun-chi (陳駿季) and other officials, per CNA. After listening to farmers’ concerns, he called for teams to hasten their recovery efforts.
He stressed the need to reduce gaps between central and local authorities, ensuring farmers feel supported throughout the recovery process.
According to the government, about 2,794 hectares were affected, with crop losses at NT$304.9 million (US$10.2 million). Damaged crops include custard apples, bananas, ginger, and pomelos, many of which were still developing.
The Agriculture Ministry said yesterday that all agricultural products in Taitung, except rice, are eligible for cash aid and low-interest loans. Certain crops, including custard apples, bananas, guavas, and pomelos, are exempt from on-site inspections to streamline relief efforts.
Chen noted that cash aid covers roughly 20% of losses, while reconstruction subsidies can cover up to 80% of select projects. One-year interest-free disaster loans, higher loan limits, and principal deferment for two years on prior projects are also available.
