TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍), the wife of former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), was taken to the hospital after fainting at home in Tainan on Friday.
The fire department received a report in the afternoon that Wu's heart had stopped beating and she was no longer breathing, per CNA. Officials gave instructions over the phone on how to treat her, and her heartbeat and breathing resumed in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Wu, 72, regained consciousness after arriving at the the Sinlau Christian Hospital in Tainan at 4:30 p.m. Chen, their daughter Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤), and her husband Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘) rushed to the hospital, according to Knews. Wu was transferred to a regular room after 5 p.m. after her condition was described as stable.
Chen and Wu celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February. In 1985, during a trip for her husband’s election campaign, the driver of a farm vehicle ran over her, leaving her paralyzed and in a wheelchair.
After Chen was imprisoned, she was elected as a legislator representing Taipei for one term from 1987 to 1990 before ending her political career.
After the conclusion of Chen’s eight-year presidency in 2008, the couple faced allegations of corruption and money laundering. Wu was sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison, but her health condition was deemed too grave for her to serve time in prison.
