TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei’s YouBike system has recorded 399.8 million rides since its launch in 2012, with the 400 millionth trip expected by Sunday, according to the city’s Transportation Department.
The department said the rider who completes the 400 millionth trip will receive gift vouchers worth NT$20,000 (US$625), per CNA. The five users immediately before and after will each receive NT$1,000 in vouchers. The department is also holding a lucky draw before September, with 40 participants set to receive coffee gift sets.
Taipei has 1,633 YouBike stations and a fleet of 23,860 bicycles, including 2,000 electric-assisted YouBike 2.0 models. Most stations are located within a 150- to 200-meter walking distance. The department plans to expand the system by next year to 2,000 stations, 4,500 e-bikes, and up to 2,000 additional regular bicycles.
YouBike 2.0 models feature a lighter frame than the previous generation and support multiple payment methods, including mobile payments and EasyCard. The parking posts are solar-powered, and the seat height is easier to adjust.
Taipei sees an average of 200,000 YouBike trips daily. Since reinstating a program that offers the first 30 minutes free last year, usage has increased by 53%. The department also reported that about 25% of residents have reduced their use of cars or scooters due to YouBike, which supports public transportation and helps cut carbon emissions.
National Taiwan University is the only school in the city with on-campus YouBike stations, with 59 stations recording up to 15,000 trips daily. To address occasional shortages, YouBike Co. developed a larger electric cargo bike that can carry up to seven bikes at a time to restock empty stations on campus.
As of now, Taichung has 1,635 YouBike stations, with an average of 60,000 trips taken daily. Since the system was launched in 2014, total ridership has reached 120 million trips.
