TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan's Tsengwen Reservoir has released water for 39 consecutive days, totaling 1.16 billion tonnes of water.
Since early July, Tainan has been hit by two typhoons, a tropical depression, and a southwesterly airstream. Heavy precipitation led the Tsengwen Reservoir to release water, with the maximum water release rate reaching 3,100 tonnes per second, according to CNA.
According to the Water Resources Agency Southern Branch, the total amount of water released is the equivalent of 13 Nanhua Reservoirs. The Tsengwen Reservoir's catchment area received 1,920 mm of accumulated rainfall over this period, leading to a total inflow of 1.17 billion tonnes.
Other Tainan reservoirs, such as Wushantou, Nanhua, Baihe, and Jingmian, have also released water. Reservoirs regularly release water to maintain flood storage capacity in preparation for heavy rains.
The latest WRA data reveals the Tsengwen Reservoir is at maximum capacity, with nearby Wushantou Reservoir at 81% of water storage capacity. Nanhua Reservoir, which supplies Tainan with water for domestic and industrial use, is at 94% of capacity.
