TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Vietnamese man surnamed Feng (馮) has been arrested for selling dog meat at Zhubei City’s Cultural Park, Hsinchu County Animal Protection Center said Tuesday.
Authorities confiscated 16 kilograms of butchered dog meat at the scene. The case has been handed to police and will be investigated by the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office, CNA reported.
In July, officials posing as buyers contacted Feng through intermediaries, agreeing on a price of NT$700 (US$23) per kilogram and arranging a transaction at the park on July 4.
On the day of the sale, Feng presented several plastic bags of meat. Animal Protection Center personnel, who were monitoring nearby, seized the pre-cut meat from his vehicle.
The meat was frozen as evidence and sent to the National Animal Industry Foundation for testing, which confirmed it was dog meat.
Feng remains in police custody. Authorities accompanied him to Changhua to trace the origin of the dog meat, aiming to uncover the supply chain and hold all involved parties accountable.
Under Article 12 of Taiwan’s Animal Protection Act, selling carcasses of dogs, cats, or other animals prohibited from slaughter by the central competent authority is illegal. Violators face fines of NT$50,000–NT$250,000 under Article 27, and their names, photos, and offenses may be publicly disclosed.
Officials urged the public to avoid buying unidentified meat products to help prevent animal cruelty and protect food safety.
