TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Army’s 6th Corps conducted a live-fire artillery exercise on Monday to test fire coordination and evaluate artillery training.
The drills took place at the Kengzikou training ground in Hsinchu and simulated contact with an enemy, Military News Agency reported. Troops deployed tactical short-range drones for aerial reconnaissance before M109A2 self-propelled howitzers and 155 mm towed howitzers carried out area fire and high-deflection fire.
The M109A2 howitzers fired without using their rear stabilizer spades.
The Third Theater Command said the military follows the principle that “anywhere can be a battlefield,” enabling troops to train in different environments and become proficient with standard weapons.
The Army plans to purchase 168 M109A7 self-propelled howitzers to replace its decades-old M109A2 and M109A5 systems at a cost of about NT$90 billion (US$3.1 billion).
