TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of the Interior plans to block former Taiwanese nationals who acquired Chinese identity documents and engaged in political propaganda for Beijing from regaining citizenship, reports said Tuesday.
Under a proposal to amend current regulations, applicants seeking to have their nationality reinstated would have to meet one of three new criteria: making special contributions to Taiwan’s defense, security, international image, or social harmony; benefiting Taiwan’s overall interests; or qualifying under humanitarian considerations, per CNA.
Humanitarian grounds would include the involuntary loss of Taiwanese nationality, health conditions, or close family ties. Applicants would also be required to provide proof they have relinquished Chinese residency or identity documents. Those aged 18 or older would need to submit a criminal record covering the past three years.
Applications would be rejected if the individual had violated Taiwan’s regulations on China, harmed the national interest, or engaged in political propaganda on China’s behalf.
