TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — “The Legend of Boundary Fort,” a landmark work in Taiwanese opera celebrated for its poignant tale of love and loyalty, will return to Taipei’s National Theater Hall in September.
Leading the cast is Sun Tsui-feng (孫翠鳳), one of Taiwan’s most respected traditional opera artists, performing alongside a new generation from the Ming Hwa Yuan opera troupe. The production will be staged for three performances on Sept. 20 and 21.
The opera follows the tragic romance between Princess Tu-lu and Luo Tong, whose relationship is torn apart by political conflict and rigid feudal customs. It explores enduring themes of loyalty, honor, and the consequences of betrayal.
Sun described the piece as an “Eastern Romeo and Juliet,” with four acts reflecting love’s journey through the seasons, unfolding with cinematic drama. She added that the story also underscores values such as peace, family bonds, friendship, and steadfast national loyalty.
Chen Chao-ting (陳昭婷), who plays Princess Tu-lu, said her character is rooted in antiquity yet embodies modern qualities of thoughtfulness and responsibility.
Under the direction of Ming Hwa Yuan Chief Director Chen Sheng-kuo (陳勝國), this reinterpretation shifts focus from the opera’s traditional martial arts elements to its emotional and social core, offering a fresh perspective on the human drama behind the historical setting.
Taiwanese opera, performed primarily in the Minnan language, emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and blends singing, dance, and theatrical performance. While its popularity peaked in the mid-20th century, the art form has faced challenges amid modern entertainment, yet many troupes and artists remain committed to its preservation.
Ming Hwa Yuan CEO Chen Chao-hsien (陳昭賢) said the revival embraces a modern aesthetic, featuring updated visuals, innovative lighting, and new costumes. The production aims to present the classic with light grace amid elegance, Chen said.
