TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Rising classical music star Lin Hao-wei (林灝維) has qualified for the preliminary round of the 19th Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland.
Held every five years, the event is regarded as the world’s premier piano competition, with three rounds leading to the finals in October. Some contestants secure spots through winning other competitions, per CNA.
In an interview with CNA, the 21-year-old said he practices seven to eight hours daily. “The competition is not just about technique but also about willpower and courage,” he said.
Two other Taiwanese pianists — Chang Kai-min (張凱閔) and Hsieh Wei-ting (謝維庭) — have also qualified this year. Lin admitted struggling with insomnia and arm inflammation from over-practice but said he has adjusted his playing style and learned to focus on the present. “I don’t feel I need to be better than others, but rather less afraid.”
Lin began playing piano at age six and has won second place at the Epinal International Piano Competition in France, as well as third place and the Audience Award at the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. He will also compete in the 13th International Paderewski Piano Competition.
After graduating from the music program at the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, Lin studied at the New England Conservatory of Music under Georgian pianist Alexander Korsantia. He said the experience helped him mature as a musician.
Lin has spent the past year and a half preparing for the Chopin Competition, refining his repertoire and style. “Chopin’s music is so delicate; it’s not just about playing; you have to listen, think, and breathe,” he said.
He added that he now feels a quiet resolve rather than nervousness. “I just want to diligently complete every note, every opportunity to perform, without any regrets.”
Lin will perform two recitals featuring pieces from Stages I–III of the Chopin Competition on Aug. 21 and Aug. 23 at the Eslite Performance Hall in Taipei.
