TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation of eight lawmakers from Latvia arrived in Taipei on Sunday, marking the first Latvian parliamentary visit to Taiwan in recent years, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The group is led by Ingrida Circene, head of the Latvia-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, per a MOFA press release. The delegation will remain until Aug. 14 and is scheduled to meet Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), National Security Council Secretary General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), and other senior officials.
A key objective of the visit is a tour of the Asia UAV AI Innovation Application R&D Center in Chiayi County to learn about developments in the drone industry. In late 2024, Taiwan and Latvia signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on drone development and manufacturing.
The lawmakers will also visit Hsinchu Science Park and the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Hsinchu County.
MOFA said it warmly welcomes the delegation, adding that the visit underscores the countries’ shared values of democracy and liberty and will help strengthen bilateral ties.
