TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology will conduct further tests of the air-launched Hsiung Feng III missile from Aug. 15 through the end of the month in the waters and airspace off Taichung, according to a military source.
Trials in the second half of the year will include simulated target lock-on and live-fire launches, per Liberty Times.
The air-launched missile has reportedly been reduced to under 1,000 kilograms by removing the booster rocket.
The ship-launched Hsiung Feng III has been in service for nearly 20 years and is mass-produced for the Navy’s Coastal Defense Missile Command and surface vessel units. It can strike enemy warships at ranges of up to 150 kilometers, while an extended-range variant capable of hitting targets up to 400 km is in production.
