TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and the Philippines wrapped up the seventh Technical Working Group meeting held in Taipei late last month.
The two countries exchanged views on fisheries-related incidents that occurred this year, according to the foreign ministry. Taiwan Representative to the Philippines Wallace M.G. Chow (周民淦) and his Philippine counterpart Cheloy E. Velicaria-Garafil co-chaired the meeting.
They discussed joint efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, aquaculture cooperation, and introducing Philippine fish species to enhance Taiwan’s broodstock diversity. They also agreed to update fisheries hotline contact information.
The foreign ministry explained that these meetings provide a platform for deepening cooperation and enhancing mutual trust. They also explore opportunities for mutually beneficial fisheries development.
Taiwan also held fishery consultation meetings with the US last month. The two countries exchanged views on renewing the MOU on Fisheries and Aquaculture Cooperation and agreed to continue discussions.
