TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Digital Minister Huang Yen-nun (黃彥男) held in-depth discussions with his US counterpart on strengthening cooperation in digital and AI technologies during an APEC conference held Aug. 3–6 in Incheon, South Korea, reports said Wednesday.
Huang told CNA that the event marked the first official joint statement by APEC digital and AI technology ministers. The statement emphasized boosting digital connectivity, avoiding the emergence of a digitally marginalized population, improving digital and AI technology adoption, and fostering a trustworthy AI environment.
He noted that the APEC statement aligns closely with Taiwan’s digital policy goals, particularly in areas such as combating online fraud, enhancing digital resilience, and expanding the digital economy.
Huang identified Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, as a counterpart who understands Taiwan well and could become a valuable partner for future cooperation. He also met with ministers from Japan and Southeast Asia to explore potential digital and AI collaboration.
Cybersecurity and semiconductors were key topics where Taiwan continues to play a critical role, Huang said, though he acknowledged that more progress is needed to sustain the country’s leadership in high-tech development.
