TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior has completed a draft amendment requiring Chinese nationals applying to settle in Taiwan to submit a notarized certificate proving they have not applied for, are not holding, or have relinquished their Chinese passport.
This requirement is in addition to the existing rule mandating notarized proof of canceled household registration in China, CNA reported. The amendment aims to prevent cases where individuals cancel their household registration but retain or later reapply for a Chinese passport.
At a national security meeting in March, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) emphasized the importance of tightening oversight on Chinese residency applications. Applicants must fully renounce both their Chinese household registration and passport, he said, as Taiwan prohibits any form of dual status.
Lai framed the requirement as part of a broader countermeasure against national security risks and United Front influence operations targeting Taiwan.
