TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Cardinal III drone has been confirmed for mass production, according to a military source.
Production is set to begin in 2026, with 90 units planned to enhance battlefield reconnaissance capabilities, Liberty Times reported. The upgraded drone weighs approximately 5–7 kilograms and can take off vertically, unlike its predecessor, which was launched by sling.
The Cardinal III has a command-and-control range exceeding 30 kilometers and is equipped with a new electro-optical reconnaissance system.
The Cardinal series of drones is in service with the Army Aviation and Special Forces Command and the Marine Corps, with each branch operating several dozen units.
Earlier versions of the drone frequently crashed in poor weather or sudden strong gusts of wind. However, the Cardinal III offers enhanced stability and improved flight control. Once production is completed, the new drones will be distributed to both forces.
