TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Trade negotiations with the US are ongoing, Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君) said upon her return to Taiwan on Sunday.
“We will continue working hard to secure better tariff rates,” Cheng said, per CNA. The vice premier traveled to the US in late July for a fourth round of trade talks. Two earlier meetings took place in May and June.
US President Trump announced a reduced tariff rate of 20% for Taiwan last week. In response, President Lai said the final rate has not been determined and the 20% figure is considered “temporary.”
Lai thanked the negotiating team, including Cheng and negotiator Yang Jen-ni (楊珍妮), for their continued efforts. He said the talks are being conducted based on the principles of national interest, industrial welfare, food security, and public health.
