TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Construction companies can reassign foreign employees to south Taiwan to carry out repair and reconstruction work in the aftermath of flooding, the Ministry of Labor said Saturday.
Tainan, Yunlin, and Chiayi have suffered severe damage in the wake of Typhoon Danas last month, with the threat of flooding and landslides still present. The ministry said that if companies involved in public projects accepted jobs involving reconstruction and repairs in the region, they could send their migrant staff to work without having to request permission from the authorities.
Approximately 30,000 households in south and central Taiwan are still waiting for their homes to be repaired or rebuilt, per CNA. The use of migrant workers will help speed up post-typhoon recovery, according to officials.
Workforce Development Agency division chief Su Yu-kuo (蘇裕國) said the necessary legal amendments had been completed to allow foreign laborers to participate in the work on private property. The same amendments also allow employers in the manufacturing sector more flexibility to transfer migrant workers from one business to another, Su said.
