TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of National Defense is preparing to submit a new special budget to spend between NT$600 billion (US$20 billion) and NT$900 billion on missiles and drones, reports said Friday.
The military plans to diversify procurement options and use the budget to purchase weapon systems from both Taiwanese and US suppliers, the Liberty Times reported. In addition to missiles and attack drones, the money would also be spent on uncrewed vessels and new command systems.
The ministry has not announced a name for the special budget package, but it will submit it to the Legislative Yuan by the end of this month, before the start of the next legislative session.
The new proposal will be the fourth special budget tabled by the military for 2026. Defense spending has been the focus of disputes between government and opposition, with the latter using its majority at the Legislative Yuan to cut or slow down some military programs.
