TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Danas inflicted more than NT$200 million (US$6.7 million) in damage to telecom infrastructure in southern Taiwan, the Taiwan Telecommunications Industry Development Association said Thursday.
Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and FarEasTone suffered heavy losses to base stations, fiber-optic lines, and other equipment, per CNA. It reported that companies dispatched around 7,000 workers to restore services, achieving a 99% recovery rate for landline, mobile, and broadband systems.
They also activated emergency protocols, with mobile base stations, satellite systems, and portable generators rushed to hard-hit areas. In some locations, repair crews worked around collapsed infrastructure, using cable-laying gear and aerial platforms to reestablish connectivity.
In addition to physical repairs, the three major providers rolled out billing grace periods and discounted SIM card replacements. Affected customers will also receive 300 minutes of free domestic calls per month for two months.
The association said that telecom operators, while service providers, are also victims of the disaster. It urged the government to consider policies that support both household recovery and long-term industry sustainability.
Helping the telecom sector bounce back is essential for restoring daily life and maintaining social order, the association said, calling for more government support.
