TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Cabinet said Thursday it would not ask for a new vote by the Legislative Yuan about the opposition-backed bill that includes a NT$10,000 (US$334) cash handout to the public.
However, it said it would reserve the right to take the package to the Constitutional Court for a review, the Liberty Times reported. Thursday is the deadline for the government to decide whether or not to send back the proposal to the Legislative Yuan for a fresh vote.
The opposition majority of KMT and the TPP approved the NT$545 billion package on July 11, including a tax rebate of NT$10,000 per person, expected to be distributed by the end of October. A government-backed NT$100 million grant to Taiwan Power Company was removed from the bill though.
The Cabinet proposed the special bill as a way to counter the potential impact of international factors, including the threat of US tariffs. Taiwan and the US reportedly concluded a fourth and final round of negotiations, with the tariff rates to be announced Thursday or Friday.
DPP legislators condemned the tax rebate as a populist measure likely to damage the country’s finances and leave the debt burden to the next generations.
