TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday apologized for the DPP’s poor performance in the recall vote, vowing to stand with citizens in the run-up to the next round on Aug. 23.
Speaking after the DPP’s first Central Standing Committee meeting since the vote on Saturday, Lai said he accepts all criticism and takes full responsibility for the outcome, per CNA. He thanked civic groups and supporters who campaigned despite harsh weather, calling their efforts an example of democratic engagement.
The handwritten petitions and hand-distributed flyers were not just paper, Lai said, noting the people’s determination to protect their country. He praised those who stood on the streets day and night, calling it both a civic lesson and a profound democratic dialogue.
Although many were disappointed by the results, Lai urged supporters to turn that emotion into strength. He pledged that the DPP would continue to walk “the final mile” alongside recall campaigners.
He called on party headquarters and local branches to fully support civic efforts leading up to the next recall vote, reiterating the party’s commitment to grassroots action and public accountability.
“Taiwan will always be our gentlest home,” Lai said. “With each of us standing together, we can move toward a more hopeful future.”
