TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is considering semiconductor export restrictions on South Africa following that country’s unilateral renaming of Taiwan’s representative offices, reports said Tuesday.
On July 21, the South African government used the term “Taipei Commercial Offices” for Taiwan’s liaison offices in Pretoria and Cape Town in an official publication. It also reiterated its request to relocate the Pretoria office to Johannesburg. Taiwan previously refused the move in March and condemned the unilateral name change as a violation of a 1997 accord between the two countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday it is discussing possible measures with other government departments, including restrictions on semiconductor exports, per Liberty Times.
South Africa has not initiated talks on the matter, according to Department of West Asian and African Affairs Director General Yen Chia-liang (顏嘉良).
Yen said the scope of sanctions is still under discussion. He urged South Africa to uphold the principles of equality and dignity, engage in negotiations, and respect the 1997 framework agreement.
