TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei and New Taipei City governments dispatched 13 water pumps, five maintenance vehicles, and 15 operators to Yunlin and Chiayi on Monday night to assist with flooding caused by torrential rains, CNA reported.
Heavy rain has affected central and southern Taiwan since early Monday, leading to severe flooding in multiple areas. Work and classes were suspended Tuesday in Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.
The Central Weather Administration forecasts that the weather will persist through the weekend, with torrential rain or thunderstorms expected in central and southern Taiwan, and occasional showers in the north. Authorities have warned of potential landslides and rapidly rising river levels.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said the city evacuated 2,079 residents from mountainous areas Monday night as a precaution against flooding. Local district offices have also prepared sandbags and pumps.
From Sunday to Monday, the city’s Environmental Protection Department deployed nearly 760 personnel to clear 50.55 kilometers of drainage systems along major roads, removing approximately 134.87 metric tons of waste. Chen said he hopes the efforts will help minimize disaster-related damage.
According to Taipower, torrential rain caused power outages for more than 9,600 households in Chiayi County on Monday, though electricity has since been fully restored. In response to ongoing weather conditions, the agency has deployed nearly 3,900 engineers across Taiwan, along with 1,689 maintenance vehicles, 511 water pumps, and about 600 generators.
Typhoon Danas, which struck July 6–7, damaged or blew off the rooftops of numerous homes in Tainan’s coastal areas, leaving some temporarily covered with tarps. To prevent further disaster, the city government relocated more than 80 residents to nearby community centers or district offices for temporary shelter.
