TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tropical Storm Co-may has regained strength and is forecast to bring rain to central and southern Taiwan well into the weekend.
WeatherRisk meteorologist Wu Shengyu (吳聖宇) said Co-may had been downgraded to a tropical depression on Saturday, but its remnants entered a more favorable environment east of Naha, Okinawa, per Newtalk. It gradually redeveloped and was officially upgraded back to a tropical storm late Sunday night.
The storm is expected to track northwestward along the edge of a high-pressure system toward China’s Yangtze River estuary. While not a direct threat to Taiwan, related low-pressure systems and converging winds have already brought heavy rain to western Taiwan since Sunday night.
As Co-may moves toward the Yangtze River, the rain zone will shift southward. On Monday, heavier rainfall will focus on Chiayi, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, with Taitung also seeing more rain, while areas north of Yunlin experience only scattered showers.
Wu predicted that by Monday night, as the tropical storm moves into a position favorable for stronger southwestern monsoon winds to enter Taiwan, rainfall in areas south of Taichung will increase again. In particular, Kaohsiung and Pingtung could face another rainfall peak, with a continued risk of torrential downpours.
Wu said the enhanced monsoon will continue bringing heavy rain through at least Tuesday. Central and southern Taiwan should remain on high alert, especially Kaohsiung and Pingtung.
As the storm moves into eastern China and heads north, monsoon winds may persist over Taiwan. Coupled with a lingering low-pressure system, windward areas south of Taichung could see heavy rain through the weekend.
Northern and eastern Taiwan will be less affected but could still see isolated showers. Afternoon thunderstorms are also possible due to convective activity. Overall, unstable weather is expected across the country, said Wu.
