TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chiayi County, Shuilin Township in Yunlin, and Houbi District in Tainan suspended work and classes Monday due to torrential rain, CNA reported.
According to the Chiayi County Government, floods occurred in parts of Taibao and Puzi Cities, as well as Dalin, Minxiong, Xingang, Liujiao, and Dongshi townships. Some major roads in the county were also flooded, and the government temporarily closed off the affected sections.
Rain began early Monday in Yunlin, leading to flooding in parts of Kouhu and Shuilin townships. A monitoring station in Shuilin recorded nearly 300 millimeters of rainfall between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., causing drainage ditches to overflow.
Several pumping stations and mobile pumps were activated in response. The county government said that at 4 a.m., a resident in Shuilin called for help after his home was flooded, and the township office temporarily relocated him.
In Taichung, rain also started early Monday, triggering flooding in Dajia, Daan, and Qingshui districts. In Dajia, multiple households experienced a power outage around 2 a.m., with electricity restored by 7 a.m. In coastal Daan District, high tide blocked water from draining through main ditches, leading to overflow on roads and rice fields.
According to the Central Weather Administration, parts of central and southern Taiwan may experience localized torrential rain or thunderstorms through the weekend. The north and east are expected to see scattered showers.
The CWA advised the public to watch out for lightning and strong gusts, and urged caution in mountainous and low-lying areas due to possible landslides and flash floods.
