TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Ting Yen-chen (丁彥宸) won the men’s singles gold medal at the Summer World University Games in Germany on Saturday, earning Taiwan its fifth gold at this year’s event.
Ting, a 21-year-old student at National Taiwan University, defeated France’s Enogat Roy in straight games, per CNA. He is only the second Taiwanese player to win gold in men’s singles at the Universiade, following Wang Tzu-wei’s (王子維) victory in 2017.
The match opened with a tight contest, but Ting surged ahead with a 10–1 scoring run to take control of the first game. Though he briefly trailed early in the second game, a series of sharp attacks helped him pull away for a 15–5 win.
Coach Lin Yu-hsien (林祐賢) praised Ting’s all-around skills and dedication to training, calling him a late bloomer who has started delivering standout performances this year. Lin said Ting’s main challenge has been maintaining mental composure during competition but added that his performance in Germany reflects what he can achieve when he stays focused.
The Summer World University Games are held every two years and bring together student-athletes from around the world. This year’s edition is taking place in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region and runs through Monday.
