TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Saturday called for unity following the results of the recall vote.
All 24 Kuomintang lawmakers avoided being removed from office, with anti-recall votes outnumbering pro-recall votes in every district.
Despite political differences, the Taiwanese people have once again shown “they can express opinions and make decisions through lawful and constitutional means,” Lai wrote in a Facebook post. “This is one of the most valuable aspects of democratic Taiwan.”
He said Taiwan’s democracy grows stronger with each act of civic participation. “As long as we persist, democracy will not lose,” he said.
Though challenges remain, Taiwan must show the world it can resolve domestic issues through its constitutional system and unite under “the spirit of democracy,” Lai said.
The president expressed hope that all political parties would continue to safeguard Taiwan’s democratic and constitutional order. “Let us work together, united, and move forward,” he said.
